What You're Really Doing When You Buy An Australian-Made Bed

About Me
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - In Style!

I love furniture, ornaments and other pieces that have a history to them. Almost everything in my home has a story behind it: I have a coffee table made out of old fishing boats from Bali, a light fitting that was first used on a cruise ship in 1902 and a bedstead I put together myself from pieces of driftwood! Furniture like this adds beauty, texture and depth to any interior design scheme--and it's easier to find than you might imagine, too. I've started this blog to share my passion for reclaimed and recycled furniture with the world, and I hope you're able to learn something new and exciting here.

What You're Really Doing When You Buy An Australian-Made Bed

Furniture shopping is no longer the easy day trip it once was. Supply chain issues linger on, mainly in the form of delayed deliveries. That, of course, has a chain reaction that causes issues with stores and with shipping the item to your home. One way to combat this issue is to buy things like beds made in Australia. That helps avoid supply chain issues that involve items shipped from overseas. It also does a lot of other good things; when you buy an Australian-made bed or other furniture, you're being more environmentally and socially responsible.

Saving Fuel

If you buy a bed made totally in Australia, you save the fuel used in shipping supplies to the country from overseas. This includes saving fuel that would be spent as the ship waited outside a port. Even if the ships are still bringing goods in and still waiting their turn outside Australian ports, the fact that they are carrying less —or in the long run will make fewer trips because of a drop in demand for international supplies — saves fuel. Saved fuel in shipping means more fuel available for other uses or for stockpiling in a national supply for emergencies.

Demonstrating The Demand For Australian-Made Products

If people don't buy Australian-made goods, companies will not think there is a demand for those goods. Instead, they'll continue to bring in goods from other countries. To clarify, there's nothing inherently wrong with buying an imported item. But buying only imported items uses up fuel and ignores the products made in Australia, which can be of excellent quality and take a shorter time to get to you, even with supply chain issues. With imports, you may end up with products made with goods that aren't very sustainable or that create a lot of pollution as they are built.

Supporting Australian Standards And Regulations

Products sold in Australia have to meet national safety standards no matter where they were made. But by buying an Australian-made product like a bed, you support companies that always manufacture goods to Australian standards, and not just companies that make an exception for items headed here. This shows manufacturers that people appreciate the standards that products have to meet here, and that the standards aren't just an annoyance that people have to deal with.

So, if it's time to go furniture shopping, look for Australian-made beds and other products. You'll have an easier time actually getting the furniture once you've chosen the pieces you want.
